Time keeps on slippin' ...

... slippin', slippin', into the future. So said the lyrics of the Steve Miller Band song Fly Like An Eagle.

It's been more than a week since my last blog post and the same length of time since my last run. I have been active though. Despite frosty temps (-7c yesterday) I am still riding my bike to/from work most days. Once the snow flies though I'll be forced to put the two-wheeler away.

Really enjoyed being in Ottawa last week and having the chance to see all the family, especially the wee ones - Kyla, Dylan, Gavin and Sadie.

Hold fast our faith and ideals that your children and their children shall know and value freedom, home and country.

Last summer after visiting war cemetaries in Belgium and France I vowed to undertake a run to visit each of the war memorials in my area, Fredericton. Following is an account of my special journey done on November 10th.

My plan was to stop at each memorial, pause for a moment, place a small note and poppy, take a few pics and then continue along the way.

I started my run with a 2.5 km leg to the memorial to native veterans on the St. Mary's First Nation reserve. A beautiful stone bust adorns the top of the monument.

From the reserve I travelled 4 km to Marysville

Although now part of Fredericton, Marysville was once a separate town and has a beautiful riverside park to honour veterans. There are two war memorials in the park.

As I left town I passed this intersection

I continued 4k along Fredericton's recreational trail system (formerly a train railbed) parallel to the Nashwaak river.

Fourth stop was the community of Barker's Point, founded by a United Empire Loyalist.

Final leg was 2.5 k, across the Saint John river to downtown Fredericton and the city's main cenotaph

See that you hold fast the heritage that we leave you. Yea, and teach your children its value, that never in the coming centuries their hands may fail them, nor their hearts grow weak.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Reality

This is a picture of Matthew Dawe, a young Canadian officer killed in Afghanistan in July. He attended my alma mater, The Royal Military College of Canada and graduated as the Cadet Wing Commander meaning he was judged the best overall officer cadet in his class. Truly one of Canada's finest. I honour his memory in particular this Remembrance Day.

Poppy Dress

When searching the web for a poppy image to place in yesterday's post I stumbled upon this image of Katherine Jenkins, a Welsh singing star. She apparently wore this poppy-inspored dress at the launch of the Royal British Legion's 2006 Poppy Appeal. I'm sure soldiers current and former, old and young approved!

Remembrance Day

This weekend, Sunday November 11th, is Remembrance Day in Canada. With so many soldiers deployed overseas and with the casualties that have been sustained over the past 12 months, it will certainly be a solemn occasion and an important time for us to all reflect on the price that has been paid by others for freedom. Nowhere is that more apparent than when visiting Commonwealth War Cemeteries like Tyne Cot in Belgium where I took the following pictures:

10K Graduation

Early yesterday morning I drove from Fredericton to Moncton for my 10k group's "graduation". They were in the Legs for Literacy event which had over 1200 participants competing in 5k, 10k, Half Marathon (21.1k) and Full Marathon (42.2k).

What a day it was! Hurricane Noel, which hit the US eastern seaboard on Friday/Saturday passed through our region overnight Saturday/Sunday and continued throughout race morning. By then it was a "post-tropical storm" but still packed wild winds and rain.

Here are a few pics of my gang:

George Canyon

Yesterday I went to a Meet & Greet with country music star George Canyon. He was in Fredericton for a concert and hosted a M&G for kids with Type 1 diabetes and/or their families. George is originally from Pictou County, Nova Scotia although I suspect he now resides in Nashville. He lives with Type 1 himself and is an extremely articulate spokesperson. I LOVE his music and so it was a pleasure to have a chance to meet him.
