Shrove Tuesday

I hope you know what that means - Pancake Day!!! Pancakes for supper tonight. Yippee, I LOVE pancakes and syrup.

Did my scheduled 5k today after yesterday's rest day. Once again it was cold and quite windy but I had on my new Running Room balaclava and the iPod tunes were cranked up so no complaints. One of the tunes on my running playlist is "New York New York". Keeps me focussed on why I am training.

Noticed that the NYC marathon website has finally switched from 2005 info to 2006 info. Tomorrow is when applications for the entry lottery can be submitted. Lucky me though, I don't have to go through the lottery due to my involvement with Team Diabetes Canada.

10K Sunday

Today was the first long run in my training schedule. Did my 10k in just over an hour. Not bad considering the windchill was about -20c and half the route was straight into the wind. My reward was a great roast chicken dinner that Jill had prepared. Rest day tomorrow then 5k on each of the next 3 days.

Friday Fundraising

Thanks to my recent donors - Libby, Winston/Helen and the O'Donnells. Total now stands at $725 so that leave $4,275 to reach my goal.

Snowed a bit last night and supposed to get some more tonight so we're off to ski tomorrow. Then Sunday I have to do 10K for my training schedule.

Way to go Brad Gushue and teammates who won the Olympic gold in men's curling today!!!

Training Days 2 & 3

Had a great 5K run yesterday (Wednesday) and will be doing 5K again today. Already starting to get psyched to do my 10K run on the weekend. Received a couple of very generous donations yesterday which I will acknowledge once I've had a chance to update my fundraising records/total.

The latest edition of the Running Room magazine arrived yesterday in which was a short article concerning a crew that did the NYC marathon last year. Very motivating.

Hi Bre - thanks for posting a comment. Yes, it was a surprise to know that someone actually read this crazy blog!!

Training Starts

Sunday was again bitter cold but I decided to get out and do 3-4K just to prove that I wasn't a "weather wimp" and that Saturday hadn't been a one-off fluke. Happy to note that weather today is much improved so it was pleasant to be outside at noon hour.

It's Tuesday so today is the start of my 12-week training schedule for the Fredericton Half Marathon. I did 5K today in just under 30 minutes. I'm having a bit of twinging in my left knee but seemed to be better as the run progressed.

Fundraising total now stands at $550 so only $4450 to reach my goal!! Hope to reach the $1000 plateau within the next two weeks.

Way to go Team Canada women's hockey - Olympic Gold Medallists!!!

Now That Was Cccccold

Just go back from a 45 minute run. Nice and sunny but wicked cold. I think the windchill was about -25c. First part of the run felt fine but last 15 minutes were tough. Oh well, at least I went.

Friday Post

With apologies to my friend Claude, who is one, why did I listen to the weatherman?! Normally would have gone for a run at lunch but this morning's forecast was crummy so I decided to get some overdue errands done. Dang, it was fine when I left the office to head out. I may try to squeeze in a run this evening otherwise I'll be waiting till Saturday and will do a slightly longer route.

Training for the Fredericton Half Marathon starts next week with a 3 mile run on Tuesday.

Thursday

Just back from a two-day business trip. Managed to get in a run on a treadmill at the hotel last night. First time in ages that I haven't run outdoors. Only positive was that I got to watch the end of the Olympic curling match that Canada was playing. Arrived home to find that my neighbours - Premier Bernard and Mrs. Diane Lord - had dropped off a donation for the the Canadian Diabetes Association. Thank you very much for your support.

Fundraing Update

Thanks to: Paul/Joan, Liz, Archie/Judy and Butch for donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Current Total - $350.00

Remainder to Goal - $4650.00

Valentine's Day

Had a nice breakfast out this morning with my sweetie, since we aren't able to go out for dinner this evening. She gave me Laura Secord white almond bark - my favourite - and noted on the card that I can enjoy it since I'm running. In return, I gave her Godiva chocolates.
Arrived at work and our office "Secret Angel" day was in full swing. My angel gave me the latest edition of Runners' World magazine and a coupon for Tim's. Thank you much.
No excuses today - I will get out for a run at lunch time.

Update ...

Met my friend Janine (she's a Consultant with Investor's Group) this morning. Like me, she's a Team Diabetes Canada alumnus. Thanks Janine for agreeing to support my NYC marathon venture.

Had a nice run at lunch and returned to find my Angel had left some sugar-free chocolates and a Diet Pepsi for me to enjoy.

Lazy Sunday

Feeling guilty that I didn't get out for a run today but on the positive side, I am spending some time working on my fundraising requests. Yesterday I "cross-trained" with a day of downhill skiing. Although we haven't had much God-given snow, Crabbe Mountain was in decent shape with man-made snow. Hopefully we get some snow this week and the temps stay cold enough that they can keep the snowguns operating 24/7.

Friday

Today is the wrap up for the 2005 United Way campaign that I Chaired. I don't know the exact amount but I understand our total raised is over $1.08 million - yabba dabba doo.

Took a half day vacation today so was able to get out for a short run mid afternoon. Yowser it was cold!! Temp is around -12c but very blustery so wind chill is at least -20c.

More donations received today - thanks Jeannette/Michael and Greg/Linda. Total now stands at $230. $4770 to reach my goal.

Thursday Run

Fairly brisk today as I headed out for my run. I passed a student who jokingly voiced his opinion that I was crazy to be out running in this weather. If he only knew how crazy I really am - trying to raise $5000 for the Canadian Diabetes Association and then run the NYC marathon!!

First Donations for Diabetes

Last night I received the first three donations in my fundraising campaign. Thanks to Gloria, Muriel and Bob/Inez. Tonight I received a fourth donation, hand delivered by two young boys that my son babysits. Thanks Calvin and Cory (I forgive you for being Maple Leafs fans!) and to your parents Jennifer/Todd. Current fundraising total - $105. $4895 to go.

Had a good run today - about 7k - including a section of the Smythe Street hill. Very windy but pleasant temperature and beautiful sunshine.

Way To Go Jill

Yesterday (Sunday) my wife signed up for a Women's Only learn to run class at our local Running Room store. It starts in March. I am proud of her for making the commitment and hope that she finds that she really enjoys it.

Super Saturday

Did a long (8-9km) run today. Weather was beautiful. Funny to be calling that a long run. As I get further into my training program the long runs will work up to 32km or more. Also delivered my first fundraising requests today. Hopefully people will be interested in supporting me as they read about my goal - the NYC marathon - and my reason - diabetes.

Eye On The Prize

When I was initially thinking about doing a second marathon, one of my thoughts was that I would try and better my time (4:46:46) from the Dublin Marathon. The more I have read about NYC though the more I realize that finish time is unimportant. It's going to be about the experience - 37,000+ runners, 5 boroughs, millions of spectators, etc.

Of course, it's also about the funds that I will be raising to support the Canadian Diabetes Association and the awareness that I hope to bring to this growing health crisis.

So, to remind me to keep my eye on the real prize - a finisher's medal - I am posting this picture.

Thursday Run

Much better. Managed to remember all my clothing layers and my watch!! Weather was once again lovely - just below zero and slight wind. Saw more runners out that usual including several dressed as though it were spring, not winter. Rest day on Friday but will try to do a short run on Saturday and then a longer run Sunday.

Discombobulated

First chance to run all week (I was out at a workshop on Monday and Tuesday) and was I ever out of sorts!! Got outside and realized that I was missing my long-sleeve undershirt and the wind was pretty strong so chilled me off right away. Then I realized I had no watch on to time my run.

While I was out I passed our realtor, Lou (Louise) Yerxa, who was also out for a run. She promised me a donation for my marathon and wished me luck in training.

Had a nice chat with my buddy Dave Pearson in Toronto and he also promised me a donation - without me even asking!! Last time I did Team D he gave me the single largest donation I received. He is a great friend and has been for many, many years.

Plan to run again tomorrow.
