Easter Monday

Hope all my dear readers had a nice Easter weekend. We had DD (darling daughter) home from UPEI for a visit which was nice. That whooshing sound you can hear is caused by the $$$ that she manages to extract from my wallet every time she's home.

Just back from my long run which I delayed until today since I had the day off work. I did 14k and it felt very good. Jill did her long run - 16k - on Saturday morning. It was bitter cold and the wind was howling. She continues to prove just how tough and determined she is though because she got it done without complaint. She is going to be super ready for her Half Marathon in May.

Sad to report that the UNB Varsity Reds came close but ended up losing in the finals of teh university cup hockey championships last night. Close game (3-2) that they could just have easily won but for the heroic goaltending of the U of A goalie.

Swimming

As I've mentioned a few times on this blog, I'm finding the swim training to be a challenge but I am really enjoying the effort that it takes. Last night at the swim class I'm taking we did a "triathlon simulation" to get a sense of what it would be like to swim in a big pack of people with arms and legs flailing everywhere. What a hoot. That was followed by a 750m time trial. This is the distance that I have to swim in my triathlon but I've never swum that far without pausing for brekas along the way. Last night I did in non-stop in 19:30. No world record or anything but pleasing just the same.

I'm finally getting the recognition that I deserve - I'm on the cover of Sports Celebrated.

Happy Birthday Kyla

Best wishes to my wee niece Kyla. Here's a cake for you. Don't forget that you promised to send me one of your birthday cupcakes !!

Here's a special St. Patrick's day image for her too:

Weekend Running

It was a busy weekend of running for me. On Saturday I did a 12k run - the first time I've been over 10k in almost a year. It felt good to "go long" and I was rewarded with an early St. Patrick's Day dinner as Jill and I went for supper at a local pub where I had Irish Lamb stew and a pint of Guinness.

Yesterday I ran in the Lincoln 5k, a fundraiser for the IWK Children's Hospital. There were more than 110 registrants so close to $2000 was raised for this great cause. Congratulations to Sean and his team of volunteers for organizing this excellent run. I finished in 27:30 which I believe is close to a Personal Best plus I won a nice golf shirt in the prize draw.

Here's a pic from the kids 800m event that preceeded the 5k.

Security Feature Added

For some reason my blog has been getting "spammed" lately. You may have noticed that there were comments left that I have removed. The reason was that the comments were actually messages that enticed you to click on a hyperlink that led to God knows where. So, to try and defeat the bad guys I have now enabled a security feature called word verification. When you post a comment (and I love when you do!) you will be prompted to type in some letters that appear on the screen. Not hard to do and it'll hopefully cut down on the junk that I've been getting.

What Weekend Weather!

Saturday night we experienced the full range of maritime weather, all in about 4 hours. It was quite mild throughout the day then torrential rain in the early evening followed by freezing rain and snow and finally fierce winds. My driveway resembles a bobsleigh run and it'll stay that way until we get some warm weather I suspect.

Jill and I went out for a short 3k run on Saturday. It was nice to be out there together but I find it difficult to run with others because it is so hard to match paces. in Jill's case she temds to vary her pace much more than I do so at times I am sprinting to catch up and at other times walking to let her catch up.

I planned to do a 10k run on Sunday but wimped out. I am proud to say that Jill went out early and did 12k with her Running Room group. It was a tough day to have the will to do that for sure.

Today I was at the pool and did "Fabulous Fifties" for a half hour or so. I hope taht I am improving a bit but still hard to tell.

Mid Week Update

On Monday I got to the pool and did a 500m (20 lengths) timed session. Yesterday I attended Jill's Half Marathon clinic. It was fun. The class portion was used to "taste test" various gels, protein bars and energy drinks. Some of them are absolutely horrid!! Then we went out for a "tempo run". Started with 10 minutes easy warm up them 20 minutes at a quicker pace and then 10 minutes easy pace to finish. Today I was back to the pool and did 50m drills.

My New Ride

Yesterday my wife totally spoiled me by purchasing the bike that I have been coveting. It is a beautiful brand new 2007 Trek 1000. Also added clipless pedals and shoes by Shimano. I am now set to tri this summer.
