The FreddyBeachPete Triathlon Transition Session

Pete enjoying a leisurely time in the hot tub

Emerging from the water he prepares to sprint to T1

At T1 he easily finds his gear due to the cool customized bike and the green towel

Note the helmet on the handlebars with glasses inside, number belt ready to go, shoes open and socks ready.

He quickly dons his lid, ensures the strap is done up, gets on his shoes and sucks down some Carb Boom (because he is diabetic and can't let his blood sugars get too low)

Quickly he runs his bike to the mounting line

Seemingly only moments later he's back in T2. Bike gets racked, helmet off and into shoes that have been left with laces loose

Faster than a herd of turtles he's off and then ...

Is that FreddyBeachPeter at the finish line?

Indeed it is. The WINNER of the first annual Backyard (Very) Short-Course Triathlon

Sadly, the only other registered participant, a Mr. Rub Berducky DNF'd after experiencing trouble exiting the water ...

Overdue

Yikes, it's been a long time since I posted any sort of update. Must admit that for a week or more after the Half Marathon my training was rather sparse. Mostly a function of my work schedule.

Had a great weekend, highlighted by a 32k ride on Saturday and the annual JDRF 5k Run/Walk To Cure Diabetes on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and I ran what I believe is a personal best time of 27:10.

Half Marathon Clinic

Here is a photo of Jill and her mates from the Running Room Half Marathon clinic. What a great looking group! Congratulations to all of them for their accomplishments last weekend during the Fredericton Marathon.

I Have "Pimped My Ride"

To make my new road bike a little special, I have added some special decals to it. On the top tube is "Team Diabetes", on one of the rear tubes is my nickname "FreddyBeachPete" and near the front is shown the name that I have given to my bike - "Sebastian".

Fredericton Half Marathon

What a great day we had yesterday atthe Fredericton Half Marathon. I was very content with my finish in just under 2:10. Jill was smokin' fast completing her first ever Half Marathon in under 2:19. What progress she has made! She finished her first ever 10k this time last year, did her first ever 15k a couple weekes ago in Grande-Digue and now her first "Half Mary".

I'll be posting pics once they are downloaded.

The Final Countdown

This weekend is the Fredericton Marathon in which Jill and I will both be competing. This week has been a "taper" period so I ran a quick 5k distance on Tuesday. I'm planning to swim today and then do a run tomorrow. Jill ran 10k on Tuesday and then a shorter distance last night. Weather forecast is good so it should be a great event!!

Three Day Triathlon

No, it's not what you're thinking. I did NOT compete in a 3-day endurance event and NO, it didn't take me 3 days to finish a triathlon

BUT

I did compete the 3 activities associated with triathlon over the past 3 days !

Friday I did the swim and it went great. I completed 1250 meters (50 lengths of the UNB 25m pool) which is the longest distance that I've ever been able to do. On Saturday I did a 30k road bike and then on Sunday I ran 10k. For both the bike and teh run I felt really strong and would've been able to push further except that I didn't want to risk things for this coming weekend.

Less than a week now until Fredericton Marathon weekend. Both Jill and I will be doing the Half Marathon - 21.1 kms. My personal goal is to finish in under 2hrs:15mins with 2:10 being my "best case" scenario. Bottom line though, finishing without injury is really the most important thing.

The Flood of 2008

This week Fredericton has been all over the national news due to a major flood of the St. John river that runs through the middle of the city. For some great photo images go to www.justfred.ca and you'll see what I am talking about.

Since the 15k in Grande-Digue attention has now turned to teh Fredericton Half Marathon that, if flood waters recede, will be run in 9 days time. This week has been a "taper" period so I swam on Monday (2x100m ladders with 25m intervals, one of crawl, one of breast stroke) and ran on Tuesday. Unfortunately work got in the way with plans both Wednesday and Thursday so today, fabulous Friday, I definitely must get in a swim and/or run.

Yesterday was Jill's birthday and just as she wanted, a shiny new BBQ was her gift. She can't wait to use it on the weekend!
